Picking just one bad habit is like getting only one piece of candy at Sweet Factory Essay Example For Students

Picking just one bad habit is like getting only one piece of candy at Sweet Factory Essay Picking just one bad habit is like getting only one piece of candy at Sweet Factory. Once I finally picked my bad habit I realized how badly I needed to work on it. Huck had a bad habit he needed to work on too. Maybe we didnt know about it or thought we could get rid of it easily. But were either of us going to work it out? In the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, which we were reading in class, the main character Huck had many bad habits as well. But his one main bad habit was lying to himself and by doing this he broke the law, his moral code and the law of God. It all started after he fakes his own death and runs to an island where he finds a run away slave, Jim that worked for Miss Watson, his guardians sister. Next they leave to find Cairo but as they float down the river they run into many hardships. While this is happening Huck is doing most of his lying to himself. This is very similar to my bad habit because during my month of trying to quit fighting with my mom I went through some very hard times holding back what I wanted to say. This was a very big hardship of mine. So I realized Huck and I had a lot in common. Hucks bad habit was first shown to us in chapter VIII when Huck tells Jim, Well I did. I said I wouldnt, and Ill stick to it. Honest injun I will. He is telling Jim he wont tell anyone that he ran away which means Huck is breaking the law of the land. We knows this because Huck also says People would call me a low sown Ablitionist and despise me for keeping mumà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ but that dont make no difference. Huck again lies for Jim in chapter XVI when he is about to tell the men on the raft that Jim is with him but his conscience comes into play. When this happens he lies to these men and this is just adding more to his bad habit. Also in this chapter Huck breaks his own moral code. When him and Jim miss Cairo he says There warnt anything to say. We both knowed well enough it was more work of the rattle-snake skin; so what was the use to talk about it? This is breaking his own moral code because he didnt believe that a rattlesnake could bring bad luck. Then he broke the law of God in chapter XXXI when he said, You cant pray a lieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ I found that out. This is when Huck realized that he doesnt think what he was doing was wrong. Last in chapter XL Huck realizes that the colors of the skin really dont matter. So at the end Huck breaks through his bad habit. Well my bad habit basically started when my mom started telling me no. And  I just wasnt going to take it. So I started talking back and I wouldnt stop until I got my way or hurt my mom. Which is really something I dont want to do. Thats why I was hoping by trying to break this bad habit I wouldnt have to do it anymore. It started out pretty good I would be ready to fight or say something that might hurt my moms feelings and I would catch myself. It started feeling better right away and my mom even noticed the change. But then I began to think less and less about it and it all started back up again. .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 , .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .postImageUrl , .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 , .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0:hover , .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0:visited , .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0:active { border:0!important; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0:active , .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0 .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc002ba1a2d452987f5c34d62ccbad3d0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Pathology Arises Out Fo The Ex EssaySo I wrote in my journals about the change and how I didnt want it to go back but before I knew it my mom and I were fighting and it was the end of the month. Huck and I were alike because I broke my own moral code by being rude to my mom. I also broke the law of God because in the bible it says honor your father and mother and I dont think what Im doing is considered that. Huck and I were different because Huck no longer had a bad habit and I still do. Well Huck worked his bad habit out and is probably feeling pretty good. However Im still working on mine and I think maybe one day I might be free of this. So Im going to keep on trying a nd if I ever do make it through this I will make sure to tell you. But until that day comes Ill always go for as many candies as I can get.

Reading Between the Lines free essay sample

A mediocre cabinet sat against the wall of my room, but its shelves housed a prized personal collection. Among these were encyclopedias, visual dictionaries, mystery novels, abridged versions of classics, and the familiar Magic Treehouse series. The contents of these shelves were the focus of my childhood and served, not to idly amuse, but to thoroughly engross and occupy me because of a love for reading. I found this small library to be so extensive that, whenever curiosity proposed a question, I would browse its vast knowledge until my interests were satisfied. The library also served as an extension of thought which widened my capacity for imagination. I was not limited to the confines of a room when I read, but overstepped these boundaries to produce vivid accounts from the plight of a madman in old St. Petersburg to the vitality of the Founding Fathers during the Revolutionary War. This exposure to reading was a major factor in cultivating my thinking. We will write a custom essay sample on Reading Between the Lines or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page My predisposition to reading was introduced to me at a young age. These were in the forms of subscriptions to science magazines. The perplexing diagrams caught my eye, and I found that reading the corresponding texts usually produced a revelation. This enlarged my curiosity as I realized that most of the answers to the universe, if not all, were easily accessible in these little blocks of text. Entering grade school, I was introduced to a new style of reading which was reading between the lines. This was a necessary skill when studying literature. The answers were still in the text, but remained latent, concealed. It required more pondering and more thinking. On this level, a new element was the reader himself who deciphered the novels intent. My recent engagements with reading have been more personal, more intimate. Literature reveals herself in short, but meaningful glimpses. She likes to whisper insight whenever I listen. In Rudyard Kiplings If, she becomes the epitome of resolve. In William Henleys Invictus, she demonstrates what extreme conviction is. I carry these snippets daily, as comfort or strength at appropriate moments. Even now, on this path in life, I am searching for answers. But like a great classic novel, the answers are not always apparent. Part of discerning is reading between the lines, and it is this thinking that has me convinced that life is composed of more than what is tangible. Over the years, I have come across a variety of short stories, novels, and memoirs. Reading develops a sort of empathy for the situations and difficulties presented. I am concerned for the struggling protagonist, which has translated into a genuine concern for other people. I have also gained knowledge from reading science articles and textbooks. In the future, I wish to be a physician. I want to work in a field that helps others and applies the knowledge that has intrigued me many times in my youth.

Should You Guess on the SAT 6 Guessing Strategies

Should You Guess on the SAT 6 Guessing Strategies SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips It can be hard to know when to guess on the SAT, especially since the recent overhaul has changed for the test is scored. But the truth is more straightforward than you might expect! Read on to find out whether you should guess on the SAT and what you can do to maximize the number of correct answers you end up with from guessing. Should You Guess on the New SAT? The SAT used to have a guessing penalty of a quarter of a point per incorrect answer. This made the question of whether you should guess on the test much more complex.Depending on how many answers you could eliminate, it might have been a good or bad idea to guess within the remaining choices.Guessing incorrectly on four questions would lead to a loss of a full point in your raw score whereas if you left them blank, you wouldn’t have any points subtracted. With the new version of the test, this guessing penalty is gone! This means that the answer to the question in the heading of this section is yes. You should answer every multiple-choice question on the new SAT, even if you have to guess. If you get all of them wrong (which is unlikely), you won’t be any worse off than if you didn’t bother to answer. This will come as a relief to many students, but you should still be cautious about guessing unless you’re almost out of time and are forced to fill in random bubbles.Don’t resort to blind guessing too quickly when you get frustrated with a question just because you know you won’t lose points; you’ll end up selling yourself short. The next section will give you strategies for smart guessing on each part of the test. Blind guesses: usually not the best option. Strategies for Making Educated Guesses Here are some strategies that will help you to avoid guessing randomly and increase your likelihood of choosing the right answer. Reading #1: Listen to Logic The SAT Reading section includes challenging passages that come from real scientific and historical writings. This means that the answers to questions about details in the passage should align with your ideas of what makes sense for the topic. Here's an example of a question that asks about an adapted excerpt from Elizabeth Cady Stanton's address to a Women's Suffrage Convention in 1869: If you're trying to guess on this question, you can eliminate some answers even if you only know the bare minimum about the content of the passage and US history as a whole. Choice A doesn't really make sense because the problem that Stanton is fighting against is long-term control of society by men. She probably wouldn't argue that "the control of society by men" was a recent development at all. Choice B also seems incorrect for larger reasons. It's unlikely that anyone would claim that the spread of war and injustice was a recent historical development at that time in history. Choice C doesn't make sense because women, not men, had traditionally dominated domestic life. This was especially true at the time that Stanton was speaking. Choice D is the answer that seems most plausible if we look at the question logically. Only recently had women begun to be appreciated as human beings on an equal intellectual footing with men (although still to a limited degree obviously, since we didn't get the right to vote until 1920...sigh). This strategy only works for some questions, but it shows how you can sometimes guess without reading the passage and still come up with a likely answer. Keep your wits about you. If something doesn't make logical sense to you, you should listen to that feeling. #2: Use â€Å"Find the Evidence† Questions An interesting development forthe Reading section on the new SATis the introduction of â€Å"find the evidence† questions. These questions will ask you to choose a quote from the passage that best supports your answer to the previous reading question.Although this could be dangerous because getting one wrong might also mean getting the other wrong, it might actually help to ground you in your decision about the most valid answer to the original question. Here’s a pair of questions from a new SAT practice test that illustrates my point. For context, in the passage Akira is a young Japanese man who is meeting a woman named Chie to ask for her daughter Naomi's hand in marriage before he accepts a job in America. Let’s say you aren’t sure about the answer to question 9. You think there are a couple of different possibilities, and none of the answers seems totally out of the question. You can check the evidence listed in question 10 for hints that might give away the answer to question 9.One of those lines must provide direct evidence for the answer. The lines for each choice in question 10 read: A. â€Å"I don’t want to trouble you.†B. â€Å"Normally I would approach you more properly, but I’ve received word of a position. I’ve an opportunity to go to America, as a dentist for Seattle’s Japanese community.†C. â€Å"Depending on your response, I may stay in Japan.†D. â€Å"I see I’ve startled you.† Now, let's look back at question 9 and evaluate the choices. There’s nothing about the speaker’s parents in the evidence, so we can cross off A.There’s also nothing about Akira's fears of Naomi’s rejection, so B is a no-go as well. There is clearly some evidence for C in choice B on question 10, so we can keep that one. There doesn’t seem to be clear evidence for D either; although the statement is true, it’s not the reason the speaker feels this is a matter of urgency, and it’s not explicitly mentioned in the quotes for Question 10. We can conclude that the answers to these questions are C and B respectively. If you use "find the evidence" questions wisely, you can go from taking a blind guess on two questions to feeling relatively confident in your answers to both. Crap, this question reminded me that I really should go to the dentist. Or even get to the point where I have an adult dentist (a dentist that treats adults, that is. My dentist isn't a child, I just happen to like putting Play-Doh in my teeth and pretending it's real fillings). Writing #3: Choose the Shortest Answer In the Writing section, the right answer is usually the one that's the most clear and straightforward. If you can’t decide between a couple of different choices and they both seem like they could be correct, pick the one that has the least number of words in it.Here’s an example: Typically, the ice sheet begins to show evidence of thawing in late summer. This follows several weeks of higher temperatures. In this case, A is the correct answer because it allows for a combination of the two sentences without including any superfluous or repetitive words. This doesn’t work for every question, but if you have to resort to guessing, it’s a good rule of thumb to follow. #4: Read Back Your Options Again This may seem obvious, but if you’ve narrowed down your choices to a couple of options, it doesn’t hurt to read them back to yourself again in the context of the passage.Even if you don’t know the grammar rules, reading things back in your head may clue you into answers that feel â€Å"off.†If you read a sentence like this under non-test conditions, would it sound right? Or would you think it was weird? There’s a tendency to twist perception to feed doubts you have about eliminating odd-sounding choices because of the pressure involved on the SAT.If you make an effort to be more objective and think of the question apart from the stressful context of the test, incorrect choices may become obvious. Don't get it twisted. Math #5: Plug It In If you think you’ll have to resort to guessing on a math problem that involves solving an equation, and you aren’t too short on time, you can try plugging in all the possible answers. You have a good chance of answering correctly if you do this, even if you had no idea how to solve the problem originally. This is a case where putting in just a little extra effort into your guess can reap some serious rewards. #6: Use the Visuals The math section includes many diagrams that illustrate the scenario described in the problem. If you’re not sure how to solve a math problem, and it has an accompanying visual element, you should make a logical guess based on the visual. Here’s an example (from a sample practice test for the new SAT) of what I mean: By looking at the diagram, you can tell that there’s only one answer that makes sense even if you don't know how to solve the question. Angle 2 is clearly larger than a right angle, so it must have an angle measurement greater than 90 degrees. This means that the first three answers are all too small to be a good fit based on what we can see in the diagram. The answer has to be D, 145 degrees! Extra-Special Bonus Section: Guessing on Non-Multiple Choice Questions There's also no penalty for incorrect answers on grid-in Math questions. You either get one point for a correct answer or no points for a blank or incorrect answer. Guess if you think you might have a shot at the right answer. Even if you don't feel confident, you have nothing to lose. I want to emphasize what makes these questions different from multiple choice on the guessing front. The grid-ins are the only questions where you shouldn't guess if you have absolutely no idea what the answer is. It’s a waste of time to fill in those bubbles at random because the chances of getting the correct answer that way are astronomically low. It's like rolling dice, but with way more sides than the number that regular dice have. Conclusion You should answer every multiple choice question on the SAT because there’s no guessing penalty! However, you also need to be meticulous in your guessing strategy so that you’re not just filling in bubbles at random. If you want your guessing success rate to be higher than it would be through pure chance, you should follow the tips I’ve given you in this article. To Review: Reading 1. Eliminate choices without direct evidence 2. Use find the evidence questions as anchors Writing 3. Choose the shortest answer 4. Read the choices back to yourself objectively Math 5. Plug in the answer choice 6. Use the visuals Special Note on Grid-Ins Guess if you think you might know it, leave it blank if you have no clue! An exercise program can also be carried out based on the conditions of each patient. Some patients may prefer to jog or walk in order to maintain their weight; some may choose to dance or to do aerobics; and others may choose weight training in order to maintain or reduce their weight (Boyd, 2008). What is important is that they can comply with their minimum activity requirement for the day in order to

Planning Transitions to Prevent Challenging Behavior Essay

Planning Transitions to Prevent Challenging Behavior - Essay Example At first glance, the articles seem to be different in the kind of content and message that they are sending out to the intended audience. However, on closer look, one can comprehend that the thrust of both articles is about the ways in which teaching methods can be improved to make a difference in the way children are taught. Both articles talk about teachers making decisions in the daily interactions with their wards. The difference in the articles is the way in which each article suggests different methods to achieve the common goal of making the students understand what is being taught and how teachers can be role models for their students. The article about â€Å"Teaching children what we want them to learn† concentrates on the different ways in which children pick up things from their teachers by looking up to them as role models as well as imbibing values and qualities from the teachers. The article makes the point about how kids at such a young age are impressionable and hence are prone to look up to their teachers in a manner similar to that they do with their parents and hence the teachers have to extra careful in the messages that they send to the students. These include verbal and non-verbal cues as well as the kind of lessons that the teachers pick for their children every day. This article also mentions the subtle difference between the statements that express a reflective desire to inculcate learning in the children as opposed to expecting the children to learn better. For instance, there is a huge difference in taking personal responsibility as a teacher and ensuring that the children get to learn and think about the children as being responsible for their education. One is reflective (as mentioned above) and the other is reactive.
